James Fisher & Sons PUBLIC LIMITED COMPANY - the leading provider of marine services
Portable RPI Calibration and Repair

The JFIMS Radiological Calibration Service calibrates and repairs portable RPI for customers across the UK. The service offers a prompt and reliable service with a rapid turn-round to all customers and complements our on-site calibration service. The service is backed up by a solid quality management system and uses sources traceable to UK national standards. The Radiological Calibration Service is based at Deeside in Cheshire, with good links to the UK national road network. We can arrange the transport of RPI to and from the RCS.

  • All work is performed by Suitably Qualified & Experienced Persons (SQEP) and calibration certificates are checked and verified by an experienced Qualified Person (QP). JFIMS meets the statutory requirements of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IRR99) by following the guidance given in NPL Measurement Good Practice Guide No. 14; "The Examination, Testing, & Calibration of Portable Radiation Protection Instruments" (GPG14).
  • We deliver a cost-effective service including tests before first use, full instrumentation checks, performance checks, repairs, adjustments and test before 'return to service' on instruments from all major RPI suppliers to the UK nuclear industry. Repairs are only carried out after your acceptance of our written quotation.
  • All work is carried out to a comprehensive set of maintenance and test procedures approved by an experienced senior qualified person.
  • Calibrations can be scheduled to ensure customers retain sufficient stock of RPI for on-going operations.
  • All RCS activities will meet the requirements of quality management system BS EN ISO 9001:2000.

Gamma dose rate

We can assess the radiometric performance of a wide range of gamma monitors, dose rate meters and personal alarming dosimeters and other RPI in our purpose-built gamma.

Measured Quantity
Range

Air Kerma Rate
(The air kerma rates are derived from measurements made by a dosemeter calibrated at the NPL)

Co60
713 μGy/h to 7.9 mGy/h
Cs137
13 μGy/h to 11 mGy/h
Am241
17 μGy/h to 1.7 mGy/h

Ambient Dose Equivalent Rate
(Ambient Dose Equivalent Rates are derived from air kerma rates using conversion factors found in ISO 4037-3:1999)

Co60
820 μGy/h to 9 mGy/h
Cs137
15.6 μGy/h to 13.2 mGy/h
Am241
30 μGy/h to 3 mGy/h

Uncertainties

The uncertainty in the applied dose rate is ±7.5% The uncertainty evaluation has been
carried out in accordance with NPL Good Practice Guide 49 "The Assessment of Uncertainty in Radiological Calibration
and Testing"

Surface contamination monitors

We have a range of large-area alpha and beta sources for the calibration of surface contamination monitors providing alpha and beta radiation of both low and medium energies. The surface emission rates are traceable to national standards. Sources are Class 2 reference sources manufactured to the standards set in ISO 8769.
