Portal monitors are an efficient method of screening vehicles or pedestrians who are carrying sources. The best detection (in terms of probability of detection and minimal detectable activity) is when there are detectors placed either side of the vehicle/pedestrian, when the vehicle/pedestrian is travelling slowly or is temporarily stationary and when the detectors as close as possible. Detectors and alarms can be either covert or overt, with options including integration into gates/barriers/doors and back up by CCTV and ANPR technology.
Portal monitors based on gross counts have the highest sensitivity to radioactivity but cannot discriminate between naturally occurring radioactive material, medical isotopes, industrial isotopes or special nuclear material. Advanced spectroscopic portal monitors can discriminate and supply this additional information which allows for different responses as a function of the type of material detected.
The Rados RTM910 is a flexible system for the monitoring of vehicles, packages and people for radioactive materials and contamination under all environmental conditions. The RTM910 is based on proven modules using modern technology, assuring accurate and reliable results and durable operation even in adverse weather conditions. The RTM 910 uses large area plastic scintillators as a highly sensitive detector for gamma radiation and 3He tubes for neutrons.
The MGP Instruments SPIR Ident is an advanced portal monitor which also detects radioactive material and contamination under all environmental conditions. It has the additional capability of rapidly identifying the radioactive substance which has triggered the alarm, offering a new and valuable tool to civil and military defence and nuclear industry customers. The SPIR Ident rapidly identifies and classifies the isotope triggering the alarm without compromising the detection performance of shielded SNM or unexpected sources. The rapid classification also helps reduce the time wasted by alarms triggered by NORM or medical sources. The SPIR Ident meets and exceeds the requirements of ITRAP and ANSI N42-38 and can be networked and integrated with CCTV etc for a complete portal monitoring system.
Hand-held search and identifier monitors can be used to fine-tune the location of an item within a suspect cargo. JFIMS also supply personal contamination monitors, tool and clearance monitors and laundry monitors
